London, UK May 14, 2004--User-Lab http://www.biad.uce.ac.uk/research/userlabSite/user.html, the user-centred design centre is to present an event entitled ‘E-commerce Law and Web Accessibility’ in conjunction with Lecote Solicitors, http://www.lecote.com/ later this month.

The event, to be held on 17 May 2004 at User-Lab (Birmingham Institute of Art and Design http://www.biad.uce.ac.uk/), will focus upon the legal issues relating to online trade. The seminar will take guests through the many new laws which govern internet business, including contract formation online, email and SMS marketing, consumer rights on the internet, digital signatures and data protection concerns.

Andrew Sparrow, Principal lawyer at Lecote Solicitors explains, “In the last two years there has been a huge amount of law, mostly from Europe, which sets out what organisations must do to trade legally over the Internet. Many businesses are unaware of how much regulation there is, but they will face fines and legal liability if they don’t comply with the law. The seminar will tell delegates the areas they need to focus on to ensure they are trading lawfully.”

"The publication of The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) report has brought Web accessibility to the forefront of everyone’s mind. However, there are many issues that have been glossed over. In our research published on Usability News website, issues such as: What is an accessible Web site? What are the trade offs between accessibility and usability? Who is responsible for poor accessibility? will be addressed from an ethical and legal perspective by myself,” added, John Knight, Usability Engineer at User-Lab.

E-commerce and the Law costs £20.00 inclusive of VAT and is free of VAT to members of The West Midlands IT Association and The Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.
